The July Cover of The RAAS Magazine was inspired by the birthday of
the United States of America... July 4th, also known as Independence
Day!
The Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the signing
and adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which officially
dates back to July 4th, 1776; when America declared independence
from the Kingdom of Great Britain.
It's a day for patriotic parades, family and friends to enjoy
picnics, concerts and fireworks, and if you need one... a reason to
fly the American flag. The Stars and Stripes originated as a result
of a resolution adopted by the Marine Committee of the Second
Continental Congress at Philadelphia on June 14, 1777. The resolution
read:
"Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen
stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars,
white in a blue field representing a new constellation."
When two new States were admitted to the Union (Kentucky and
Vermont), a resolution was adopted in January of 1794, expanding
the flag to 15 stars and 15 stripes. This flag was the official
flag of our country from 1795 to 1818, and was prominent in many
historic events including the inspiration of "The Star-Spangled
Banner" written by: Francis Scott.
However, realizing that the flag would become unwieldy with a stripe
for each new State, Capt. Samuel C. Reid, USN, suggested to Congress
that the stripes remain 13 in number to represent the Thirteen
Colonies, and that a star be added to the blue field for each new
State coming into the Union. Accordingly, on April 4, 1818,
President Monroe accepted a bill requiring that the flag of the
United States have a union of 20 stars, white on a blue field,
and that upon admission of each new State into the Union one star
be added to the union of the flag on the fourth of July following
its date of admission. The 13 alternating red and white stripes
would remain unchanged. This act succeeded in prescribing the
basic design of the flag, while assuring that the growth of the
Nation would be properly symbolized.
Eventually, the growth of the country resulted in a flag with 48
stars upon the admission of Arizona and New Mexico in 1912. Alaska
added a 49th in 1959, and Hawaii a 50th star in 1960. With the
50-star flag came a new design and arrangement of the stars in
the union, a requirement met by President Eisenhower, issued
August 21, 1959. To conform with this, a national banner with 50
stars became the official flag of the United States. The flag was
raised for the first time at 12:01 a.m. on July 4, 1960, at the Fort
McHenry National Monument in Baltimore, Maryland.
Traditionally a symbol of liberty, the American flag has carried the
message and spirit of freedom to many parts of the world.

With our June Issue Cover, we decided it was time to go brighter and reach out to those
yearning for a massage and other options along the lines of personal pampering. We featured
the 7 companies (among our current advertisers) who are offering these types of services, in
hopes of shining a light on each of them; since summer will be officially here this month
and many of us are searching for ways to prepare ourselves.
In the United States and the rest of the northern hemisphere, the first day of the summer
season is the day of the year when the Sun is farthest north (on June 20th or 21st). This
day is known as the Summer Solstice.
It was also our goal to connect with the women (of all age brackets) within the area... we
wanted to make sure they were looking for The RAAS Magazine each month in their mail box
and/or on the rack at Sam's Club, Henry's Market, Regal/Edwards Theater, and the many other
high-traffic locations The RAAS Magazine is available at throughout the Temecula Valley.
Much of the savings and value contained within The RAAS Magazine each month (provided by our
advertisers/local businesses) is directed at Women, and we want to make sure they don't miss
out on the discounts and offers being made.

The wine is awesome and the views are spectacular from the La Cereza Spanish-style winery which is
where the February, 2008 Cover photograph was taken. We asked Megan Franks (Professional
Photographer) for a picture that included wine, cigars & a Harley… she knew just the place,
made a call and a date was set at La Cereza Winery & Grill …located just off Rancho California
Road in Temecula.
The Harley Davidson (Motorcycle) is parked just in front of the lower area outdoor Cigar Bar which
is a beautiful place to enjoy a glass of wine, a cigar and visit with friends and family around the
fire.

December/2007 Cover Photograph
The cover picture of our December, 2007 issue is …a close up of a silver Christmas tree ornament
hanging from a tree. The lights coming through the cut-out area of the ornament are just normal
Christmas tree lights but if you look close, they seem to work for both the tree and the ornament.
It was our idea to show the spirit of the holidays and to attempt to invoke happy memories of
holidays past & present… it was also our attempt to bring a smile to the faces of all those who
looked upon our cover.
We hope that you all had a great holiday season and were able to enjoy quality time with your
family & friends. It is our wish that the next year and all those to come bring you success in
all you wish to achieve! Happy Holidays from all of us at The RAAS.

On her myspace.com profile page…
award winning, local photographer Megan Franks explains that she enjoys her work and has a need to
explore, travel and experience different people, cultures and places. After a brief glimpse
through her photography portfolio we at the RAAS were convinced that Megan has a true gift of
finding that perfect picture through the lens. It was very difficult
to decide on the photo to use for the cover since so many of her photographs taken within the area
were magnificent. The decided photo contains an incredible picture of the Sun setting within the
clouds and was chosen because of the awesome color and focus that was captured. It is a very
grabbing picture that we at the RAAS feel would be very hard not to appreciate.
